Now, when you order a beer with the words “clown shoes” in the name, you probably don’t expect to take it seriously. That is until the bottle they bring out is a 22oz monster. I think I may have found my favorite beer joint.

The Atlantic Beer Garden in the South End has a pretty impressive beer selection, and this time I went off purely by the name I hadn’t heard before. Clown Shoes Clementine is an orange flavored White Belgian Ale. I’m usually not one for fruit flavored beer, and I don’t know if it was because the Celtics won the night I had this, but I enjoyed this one a lot. It’s a solid seasonal beer with a light carbonation going on. It’s flavorful enough for the average beer drinker. Clown Shoes Beer is brewed locally in Mass. Although that’s kind of all the info I could find on them.

Give it a shot if you’re feeling a new summer seasonal, just get ready to drink a lot of it.

Cheers.

Notch Sessions Pils by the Notch Brewing Company in Ipswich. So that makes it local. Which means I’ll probably like it. Seriously, though. I’ve never had a pilsner that I could drink faster than soda. If it wasn’t for the slow ass service at Tasty Burger I would have been able to drink 4 of these in an hour, and I’m no beer chugger. It has an amber color that you can’t see because of Tasty’s decision to paint the entire scenery red. Its served definitely a subtle all around kind of beer. Hits all the senses you want without overpowering any of them. Making it safe, and actually a bit dull. I mean, I liked it. It was ice cold while eating a burger. (Which despite most of Tasty’s mistakes, they make a damn good burger.) So there you have it, they can’t all blow you away. A solid summer beer to have with summer food. Cheers.

So, I was fortunate enough to be a plus one at the launch of Harpoon’s new Rich and Dan’s Rye IPA. It was an exclusive event where one of my good friends won a raffle and was invited to the tasting. It was a great experience, surrounded by other beer lovers and in the presence of the founders of the Harpoon Brewing Company; something my friend compared to being in the presence of a celebrity, and it was for any beer lover.

An event like this is great because… well… free beer? How can you beat that. I was able to taste everything Harpoon brews, all on tap, all freshly brewed in the same building. In order what I had was Harpoon’s Rye IPA, Harpoon IPA, Harpoon Summer, Catamount Maple Wheat, Harpoon Dark, and Harpoon Chocolate. Now, obviously I can’t tell you the details on each and every one, but they’re all quality beers. So lets focus on the beer of the evening: Rich and Dan’s Rye IPA. The founders spoke briefly about the beer - saying that it was the result of the duo bar hopping across Boston and the Greater Boston Area until they finally realized their inspiration.

The beer itself is very hoppy, malty, sweet, and peppery. It has a great unfiltered texture and is full bodied to the max. This beer demands attention, and am sure it will be a hit with beer lovers everywhere. Lets put it in terms that everyone can understand: If you see this beer on tap, get it. It’s as simple as that, it’s worth your time to try it at least once.

The Harpoon Brewery knows how to deliver, and they didn’t dissapoint this time around. Being able to be a part of an event like this really reinforces a bond from beer maker to beer drinker and really appreciate the opportunity to be a part of something like this.

Cheers.

Lets talk IPAs. My ideal IPA is hoppy, citrusy, and a little bitter; Avery IPA is more than all of these things. The Avery Brewing Company has outdone themselves with their take on the classic. It is all the things I described to a level you may not have had before, when I say this thing has hops, it’s got NBA level hops. See what I did there? This is one of those, “not your average beer drinker’s beer” in the risk of sounding pretentious. It is one of the more bold tasting IPAs I’ve tasted in a long time, and I am not mad at that. To put a word on it, I’d say Challenging. You know you’re drinking a serious beer, and it doesn’t let you forget. The overall flavor works perfectly with it’s strong finish - definitely a beer to appreciate instead of just get sloshed on.

So, apparently the Olde Magoun Saloon (Medford) is a craft beer dedicated establishment, which is wonderful. What’s even more wonderful is this place is about a 100 yard walk… or stumble from my place. Regardless, I have my work cut out for me, and it doesn’t seem like I’ll need to go far to try all the beers you see above. Look forward for some consistent posts, beer lovers.

Cheers.

Hiatuses suck. The reasons for hiatuses suck even more. I.E. you’re limited on funds and can’t enjoy a tasty expensive exotic beer as often as you would like. What a bunch of bullshit, right?

But you do what you have to to survive, and sometimes that means making sacrifices. But that makes to return all the sweeter - It’s like when Paul Pierce came back when you thought he was injured in the playoffs and scored back to back 3’s to put the Celts on track to win the championship…

Okay, it’s not that glorious, but it does feel good to be back. And what a way to return. Upon first sip of this magical brew, I remembered why I love beer. Sam’s Spring Seasonal is Alpine Spring. And I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if they bore a hold in the mountain and tapped the water on the spot. Easily one of the cleanest beers I’ve ever tasted, it goes down easily with a bitter sweet tang that balances perfectly and doesn’t over do it. It’s a casual sipping beer to enjoy a beautiful spring day, like today. (Okay, it’s still technically winter, but if the hippies from Mass Art are wearing their hemp shirts an cargo shorts, I say it’s Spring. Deal with it.

Hopefully I can get back on the wagon… Or off the wagon… wherever you are in relation to the wagon when drinking. That’s where I want to be. Get your hands on this brew ASAP. You won’t regret it.

Cheers.

So I finally moved into my own place, and it’s awesome. I have a lot of family and friends close to home. I’m living in Meffa, now, dude. And the On the Hill Tavern is literally right outside my door step. I’m even on a first name basis with the local liquor store… What can I say, I love my work.
Anyway, the Tavern is sleek, clean, and a cool local spot for hanging out. There’s pool tables, big screen TVs, jukebox, burgers, and of course beer. Everything anyone needs. But the thing that surprised me most was the fact that they have Samuel Adams Boston Brick Red on tap.
Lets talk about how important this beer is to my blog for a second. I mean, if there was ever a mascot for this blog, this beer would be it. It’s a European style Ale with a deep rich amber/ruby color due to pale caramel malts. Of course it has some heft to it (with a name like Brick Red, you should expect it to). It is so named for the historic Boston Brewing Company’s original building. Also, a donation is made to the Samuel Adam’s Charity “Brewing the American Dream” which gives back to the Boston Community. Therefore you can feel all warm and fuzzy getting shattered off of this beer. Once again the website can explain it better than I can. http://www.samueladams.com/btad/promotion.aspx?id=99b23798-b1ba-4440-994c-19c70b446810

So, in my opinion, no beer that cost $2 a pint, or $8 a pitcher should be taken seriously. It says it’s Canadian, but it’s owned by Budweiser. It probably was Canadian at one point but I wouldn’t tell the Canadians that. I mean, look at how they act when they lose a hockey game.
But this is Molson Canadian. I mean, I guess it’s kind of smooth… A little bitter. It doesn’t stand out in anyway, really. But I love it! I don’t what it is, it must be a combination of the price you can usually find it for, two to three bucks a pint, the overall average taste that makes it the perfect occasion beer. Occasion beer, you ask? Well, it’s just one of those things that peripheral things; you know you have a beer, and you’re getting loose. I don’t think it’s really a compliment to say that it’s a beer so average you don’t know your drinking it. But sometimes it’s simply not about the beer.
It’s just a beer you end up having a good time with, watch sports, party, dinner, etc. It’s a casual beer. It’s mainstream, I know, but I’m not a beer hipster. People should just admit that sometimes you just want to get drunk.
Cheers folks.

Sushi time. So, we’re shaking things up a little. Breaking away from the bar scene for a second and getting wicked fancy. MA Soba is a Sushi joint, about a 5 minutes walk from government center. It looks high brow, but the prices are very reasonable, even for a sushi place. Given the circumstances, I just had to try a Japanese beer.
Sapporo Premium Beer. Basically, sushi’s best friend. It’s tailor fit for seafood without being part of the whole thought. It’s basically made to compliment the sushi. It’s plain uninterrupted flavor is basically a pallet wash before your next bite. That’s not to say it’s not tasty, just very subtle. Light malt flavor with a bitter sweet taste that’s perfect for washing down bites of tempura.
According to my waiter this is the most popular ordered one, so that either tells me one of two things: It’s a really good beer with sushi, or it’s like the Busweiser of Japan.
Regardless, it’s an experience worth checking out if you’re into sushi. If not, this post might not be for you.
Cheers.
